Styling your hair requires constant effort and time. In some cases, it even requires you to shell out a large amount of money to ensure that your hair is looking its best all the time. But do you really need to? There are a few styling tricks that require practical use of the items you already have to get your hair looking perfect without costing you a dime.

Dry Hair with Paper Towel

You have probably heard about this practical hair styling tip, but it’s no myth. The old habit of wrapping your hair in a towel post-shower is one that you need to get rid of. On the flip side, using paper towel to wring your strands will effectively absorb excess water from your hair to make it dry faster. Plus, the material is extremely gentle so it won’t create unnecessary frizz during the drying process.

Is your hair misbehaving? Is it not responding to your styling efforts as it usually does? It could be due to product buildup on your scalp. A clarifying shampoo can help – but sometimes, it is not enough to provide the cleansing you need. Aside from misbehaved hair, you can also suffer from weakened hair growth and fragile strands due to clogged follicles. Try preparing a product buildup cleansing rinse using baking soda or find a good astringent designed to clarify your scalp.

Be Smart About Heat Styling

A lot of products designed for volume enhancement are heat activated. If you are worried about causing damage to your locks, you need to adapt proper techniques to maximize the lifting effect. For instance, blast warm air onto your roots to get more lift. By the time you add in the volumising products and scrunch your hair, it will allow the style to stay for longer.

Don’t Overboard on Protein Treatments

A protein treatment or conditioner helps to strengthen or reinforce structure of weak hair. However, you do not need to apply them so often as it can also damage hair. Use them once every two months. One of the setbacks to using too much protein treatment is that it can contribute to product buildup.

Fake Fuller Hair with a Toothbrush

No need to invest in expensive hair styling products to get fuller hair. You can use one in your own kitchen – a toothbrush. It starts with blow drying. Avoid smoothing your hair as it can cause hair to collapse and fall flat to the scalp. Instead, tousle your hair using your fingertips. Wait for the strands to dry so you can back comb your hair using a clean and dry toothbrush. This will give your roots that extra lift.

Avoid Roof Poof

A good trick to address hair with waves that do not form until the temples is to use a terry cloth headband. Make sure you place this on damp strands. Wait for the hair to air dry before removing the band. This will create a more uniform volume in hair from the root to the ear.

Show, Don’t Tell

One of the common mistakes that women do when they go into the salon is to tell their hair stylists they want a specific hairstyle. However, you need to refrain from doing so because they can be misinterpreted. Instead, go with a photo of the hairstyle you want. This will ensure you are on the same page.

Protect Locks in the Shower

Does your hair feel dry and extra brittle? It could be the water! Make sure you protect your locks in the shower by attaching a shower filter. This will prevent rust, chlorine and other minerals from being in contact with your hair, making it feel and look extremely dry.

Hold Your Updo

Updo hairstyles are great for keeping your hair off of your face and also creating a glamorous look. But it can be frustrating trying to get them up. But here’s an effective trick you can try: apply dry shampoo on a bobby pin. Use that to secure the updo and the added grip from the powder will keep the pin from sliding out.

What other styling tricks can you add to this list?
