The myth that second day hair holds better styling is not a myth after all. Aside from the ability to respond better to styling, second day hair provides the added advantage of being naturally fuller and more beautiful looking. Minus the issues of greasiness for some women with naturally oily hair, there are several reasons why you would want to skip daily washing.
The oil in the hair is partly responsible for making it appear smoother and softer, while also contributing to holding better style. But a lot of women forget these benefits and mis-wash their hair, particularly when you want to get ready for a big event. What do you do? Here are some tricks that you can use to fake second day hair and have the same effects even when you just wash it:
Avoid drying hair completely: When you finish washing your hair, do not dry it 100 percent but make sure that your hair still feels slightly moist. You can let the hair dry naturally thereafter. If you dry your hair completely, this could result in appearance of static. A slightly damp hair, on the other hand, is easier to manage and feels smoother.
Prep your hair for styling: It is important to lay out the foundation for allowing your hair to hold its style for longer. A heat protection styling crème works best to recreate the look of second day hair. Choose a brand that works well for your hair type and apply it to your locks prior to blow drying.
Take your time when blow drying: As noted above, you do not want to completely dry up your hair or else it will look frizzy and flat. Use minimal heat setting on your blow dryer to ensure that your hair slowly but gradually dries as you style it rather than shocking your locks with too much heat right away. Your goal is to recreate the natural air drying process.
Use matte products: This is a reliable trick to recreating that look of hair that you have slept with. Second day hair is almost always greasy (although the levels of greasiness will vary according to hair type) so matte products will make your hair look slightly greasy. However, you need to be extra careful in determining the right amount of matte product to apply. If you put too much, you can end up with piece-y hair texture – that is not what you are aiming for here.
A little hairspray can go a long way: Choose a flexible hairspray to finish off your styling and recreate the second day hair look. You do not want an extremely hard hold but rather something that has more definition and shape that lasts.
