A keratin treatment is a good treatment to have for your hair. However, there are a lot of women who see their investment flush down the drain simply because they do not know how to properly care for and maintain it. A keratin treatment is basically the process of injecting keratin, a type of protein embedded naturally in the hair, to fight frizz and rejuvenate your hair strands. It is more popularly referred to in today’s industry as the “Brazilian Blowout”. Any hair professional will vouch in the benefits of a keratin treatment.

Hence, you need to take note of these maintenance tips to preserve the effects of your keratin treatment.

The first major rule for maintaining keratin treatment is to refrain from washing it 72 hours after undergoing treatment. This will give the treatment enough time to be absorbed deeply into the cuticle. Water also washes away the keratin in your hair. Hence, opting to wash it immediately will just wash off any of the effects you temporarily enjoyed.

Meanwhile, you must also refrain from using chemicals on your hair or heat styling (at least initially after the treatment). Aside from washing off the results of keratin treatment, it can also result in frizz, dullness, and your hair strands becoming coarse.

Like a freshly re-bonded hair, hairstylists advise against clipping or tying your hair in a ponytail after a keratin treatment. It is best to wear your hair down. Even tucking your hair behind your ears is not allowed. Ideally, you need to wear your hair down for up to 3 days following the treatment to avoid bendings in the hair.

When it comes to investing in hair care products, there are a few guidelines you need to know when it comes to maintaining keratin treatment. Avoid sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. This means that if you haven’t been reading the label when you shop for a new shampoo or conditioner, this time you need to. Products containing keratin, however, is recommended to further enhance the effects of the treatment in your hair.

Every little measure you take to preserve the effect of keratin treatment can go a long way in preserving the results. Make sure you take note of them when you are planning to get a keratin treatment.
