Coping with Hair’s Texture Changes

The texture of your hair is something you are born with. Hence, you learn to adapt to it and adjust your hair care and styling habits around it. But due to its exposure to a number of factors such as weather conditions, heat styling, hair styling products, or chemical hair treatments, your natural texture can change as well. It can be unsettling when it does – you are used to a particular set of habits and a new texture would also entail changing your entire hair care and styling routine.

The best way to deal with texture changes in your hair is to understand the cause behind it. Once you understand the cause, you will be able to address the root of the problem and make styling (and caring for it) easier.

Graying Hair

damaged hair

This is the primary reason for changing hair texture and comes as a result of increased hydrogen peroxide buildup in the follicles. It, therefore, comes with a bleaching effect that comes from within the strands. The texture of gray hair is somewhat wiry and definitely thicker.

Sadly, there is nothing you can do the stop graying of hair. But you can tame it using special hair care techniques such as choosing shampoos and conditioners formulated to treat dry hair. The strands of gray hair also tend to be coarser so make sure to use leave-in conditioner. Other treatments recommend for the rough texture of gray hair include keratin treatment and deep conditioning.

Over-Processed Hair

Chemical processes such as getting a new hair colour or curling the hair can alter the natural texture of the hair. In most cases, women subject their hair to too many chemical treatment or processes within a short period of time, making the texture rough, dry, brittle, and lackluster (as the natural oil is completely depleted). Aside from a change in texture, it will also prompt your hair to resist any form of styling done to it.

The best way to deal with this problem is through preventive measures. Limit the amount of processing you do to your hair or else its natural structure will break down over time. You can facilitate in restoring the natural and healthy texture of your hair by undergoing deep conditioning treatments and using moisturising hair care products. Protein treatments are also recommended to restore its vibrancy and vitality. When buying hair care products for overly processed hair, look for panthenol, protein, or amino acids in the ingredients label.

Hormonal Changes

This is one factor that causes a change in your hair texture of which you have no control of. This is typical on pregnant women. Thankfully, it is commonly for the better as pregnant women tend to have thicker and shinier locks.

When you see your hair becoming thicker and shinier, the best you can do is to facilitate in the healthy growth by consuming sufficient amounts of B vitamins on a regular basis. Protective styling methods can also aid in the process of hair care during pregnancy.
