Curling your hair seems like a very easy process. After all, you simply clip on your hair and wait for it to get curled, right? Truth is, there is a lot of technique involved in getting the right curl. The way you are wielding this hot tool can impact the type of curl you can get.

Indeed, technique matters when using curling iron. Specifically, you have to consider to which direction you are twirling your curling iron.

For natural looking curls…

You need to turn your curling iron left and then right. If possible, do this in an alternating manner. The alternating curling patterns allow the hair to go on different directions and reducing uniformity in the look. This particular styling trick is recommended for women who are aiming for the tousled, effortless look.

For deconstructed messy waves…

The technique to achieving this type of curl is in the way you hold your curling iron with your hand. Make sure you hold the curling iron in a vertical manner so you end up with a more relaxed looking wave. The idea of holding the iron on a vertical manner makes the waves appear loose rather than being too tight. Take note of this the next time you want to re-create the hairstyles of the Victoria’s Secret angels.

For polished curls…

You need to hold your curling iron in a horizontal manner. Doing so will create that S wave pattern to your hair. This is a technique recommended for women who wanted to achieve that old Hollywood glamour look. You can try brushing it out for a polished look perfect for an evening soiree or cocktail party.

Now that you know the basics on which direction to curl your hair to, it is important to check the temperature of your curling iron. You need to get the tool hot enough so that it bends over to the desired direction. However, avoid setting it too high as it can also make your hair look fried.

What other curling iron techniques have you tried?
