Spring and summer is such a fun time for outdoor activities. You might love to frolic under the sun, explore outdoor adventure, or just lounge on the beach. But it is only a matter of time until you come to grips with the challenges that the climate offers on maintaining your hair, especially if you have curly hair. Changes in seasons like this can be tough on your curly hair care routine but it is easy to deal with once you know how to handle it with utmost care.
High humidity is extremely harsh on curly hair and the reason behind that lies in the physical texture of this type of hair. Straight hair tends to fight humidity more effectively than curly hair does because the former has overlapping protective layer of scales in the hair follicle. Meanwhile, curly hair tends to be more porous than straight hair so its hair cuticle are not always flat, thus making it susceptible to environmental conditions. When excess moisture in the air is absorbed by curly hair, it breaks up the hydrogen bonds within the hair resulting in clumping on the external surface. This is how frizz forms. This becomes even more problematic when hair is not properly hydrated, which is inevitable during hot weather days.
To get by spring and summer without experiencing major hair woes for your curly locks, here are important steps you can take:
1. Get trimmed regularly. It is a must to keep your hair under control. However, you need to pay attention to important guidelines before cutting curly hair.
2. If possible, refrain from using thermal styling techniques or hot tools. These will further aggravate the porosity and chemical bonds of the hair resulting in hard to manage frizz.
3. Saturate your curly hair with conditioner. However, you need to avoid using products that contain glycerin or other types of humectants because they can aggravate problems of frizz in curly hair.
4. Refrain from undergoing chemical treatments in spring or summer. Curly hair is already inherently more porous than straight hair. Chemical processing will cause your hair to become more porous.
5. Small measures like minimising direct sun exposure to hair can do a great deal in preventing and/or fighting frizz. Never step out into the sun without putting on a leave-in conditioner or wearing a hat.
6. Be generous with moisturising your hair. Use a conditioner in the shower and apply leave-in treatments when you style your curly hair. Properly moisturising your curly hair reduces the diffusion of moisture that is going in and out of your hair.
7. Invest in a styling gel with low viscosity.
