Are you looking to lighten up your hair colour? There is no need to hit the salon every single time… you can get it done by yourself at home. You can scour your kitchen for a few items that you can use for lightening ingredients for your hair.

Lemon

This is most probably the most popular ingredient used for DIY hair lightening. The citrus acid found in lemon helps to lift the colour in the hair to produce natural and sunny-looking highlights. In order to create a homemade lightening recipe for hair, combine a cup of lemon juice with a quarter cup of water. Pour this mixture into a spray bottle and shake vigorously before you apply it to hair.

The only downside to using lemon as a DIY hair lightening ingredient is that it can make hair extremely dry. Hence, you can compensate for that by adding moisturising agents or conditioner to the mixture. Spray the mixture to your hair every half hour to ensure that the formula remains potent.

Chamomile

The natural golden hue of chamomile tea makes it a good natural ingredient for hair lightening. In addition, the chemical composition of chamomile helps to enhance the blonde undertones of your hair.

To make this recipe, brew a pot of chamomile tea. Set the tea aside to cool. Apply the tea to your hair or specific parts where you wish to get some hair colour. Get out in the sun and let it dry. You will notice your hair will naturally brighten from this mixture. No need to worry because using chamomile on hair is safe and you won’t have to deal with brassiness.

Honey

Did you know that honey contains a small amount of hydrogen peroxide? This acts as a lightening ingredient, which when used on hair can effectively lighten it a few shades. The good news about using honey as a natural lightening ingredient is that it is filled with moisturising properties so you do not have to worry about drying your hair in the process.

To avoid the sticky texture of honey, mix it with water and vinegar before applying to your hair. This will dilute the honey to make application that much easier. For best results, leave the mixture on overnight and put on a shower cap.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon

It is easy for dark hair to turn brassy, especially when it is constantly exposed to the sun. Hence, you might be surprised to know this, but cinnamon is very effective as a lightening mask because it lightens the hair colour in a subtle manner but without the brassy tone side effect.

Start with a damp hair and apply conditioner. This will make it easier for the cinnamon to stick to your hair when you apply the paste mixture. Make sure that all of your hair, from top to bottom, is fully coated with the cinnamon paste in the process. If you want to, you may also leave the mixture overnight. You can repeat the process as often as desired because it has been proven to cause no harmful side effects to your hair.

Which of these DIY lightening recipes have you tried? If you got more to share, be sure to share them in the comments section.
