Anyone with hair care problem tends to look for advice on the proper way to maintain their looks from the internet, magazines, and other similar sources. But with the sheer amount of hair tips available, it is hard to filter through the information and formulate your daily hair care regimen out of it. In most cases, you end up causing more damage to your locks by applying hair care techniques or products that do not work well with your hair type.
Most experts would impose a few “rules” that everyone should follow when it comes to maintaining the health of your hair. But here’s some news for you: you don’t always have to live by these rules. Most of these so-called rules are myths that had already been busted, or are taken out of proportion only causing hysteria where it isn’t needed.
Rule 1: Brushing your hair 100 strokes a night.
This is clearly a myth – brushing your hair 100 strokes a night does not bring forth shine to your hair; in fact, they make your hair more prone to breakage. Experts have weighed on this myth and you should definitely skip this one. Instead of brushing 100 strokes, consider the proper way of brushing. Use a fine quality brush and apply gentle strokes to allow equal distribution of natural oils from your scalp to the tips.
Rule 2: Always apply conditioner after shampoo.
This one is not a cutout rule for hair care – you have to base it on your hair type. Those with thick and dry hair are recommended to use conditioner after shampooing in the shower. But fine hair can do without.

Rule 3: Apply styling products to hair before blow drying.
This one is simply a case of getting the proper order – experts believe that you need to blow dry your hair first until it is damp, not sopping wet. At this point, you can apply the styling products and continue blow drying.
Rule 4: Skip hair color as it can damage your tresses.
There is no reason to fear coloring your hair, at all. Most of hair color products manufactured today are made with extra conditioners; hence, there is no need to worry about damaging your hair. If you are to color your tresses, though, it is best to have it done by a professional for quality results.
Rule 5: Change your shampoo from time to time so your hair won’t get used to it.
The main reason behind this particular hair care “rule” is motivated by the sentiments by a lot of women that their hair isn’t as soft as it used to be when using a shampoo for the first time. Experts point out that it can be due to the ingredients on the shampoo that coats the cuticle, causing it to look dry or lifeless. But instead of switching shampoos constantly, make a definitive switch (if you’re not happy with the results of the one you’re using) and stick to it.
Rule 6: Don’t shampoo everyday.
The frequency of washing your hair with shampoo depends on your hair type and health of the scalp. Most experts would recommend that you use shampoo daily, but would not recommend the same for those with extremely dry hair and scalp. There are also lots of advantages for washing hair with shampoo everyday such as ability to eliminate oil build up and dirt, which inhibits your follicles from developing naturally.
