Do you often get the urge to scratch your scalp to no end? Is the burning sensation distracting you more than you would like? You might have sensitive scalp! People with this particular condition tend to be irritated quickly than others, which can be very unfortunate. However, all is not lost because there are ways you can restore the equilibrium in your body and keep your scalp in control instead of it controlling you.
The scalp is also a skin, which is covered with a protective barrier. There are a number of external influences that can result to that barrier being broken, such as extremely harsh hair care or styling products, dirt, dust, extreme weather conditions, or diet. Once that barrier is broken, your scalp becomes vulnerable and suffers from itching, burning, dandruff, redness, among other indicators of highly sensitive scalp.
Since your scalp is an integral part of your hair care routine, it is important to know how you can care for your scalp, too. You can start by correcting common hair styling habits that make your sensitive scalp more prone to damage. Refrain from using alcohol-containing products for styling hair that can result to dry, sensitive scalp. Switch to a mild shampoo and don’t forget to check the labels to ensure that your styling products do not have high alcohol content.
Your scalp is also highly vulnerable from climate conditions, which demands specific hair care regimen on winter or summer. Always go for products that hydrate your scalp because moisture is an integral process in maintaining scalp health. In addition, use products that have a nourishing effect on your scalp so it is revitalised in the process. When in doubt, consult your dermatologist about the right hair product to use for your sensitive scalp.
An oil treatment is also a savior for your sensitive scalp. You can take any kind of oil you want (best ones are jojoba oil, tea tree oil, and coconut oil) and massage a few drops into your scalp. For best results, leave it on overnight. Make sure to cover your entire head in shower cap to seal in the moisture and nutrients from the oil.
When it comes to ultra sensitive scalp, make sure to massage shampoo onto your dry hair. Then, lather up the shampoo with water. For rinsing your hair, use lukewarm water.
Lastly, forego any form of heat styling when you are suffering from sensitive scalp and would like to treat it. Wait until the equilibrium in your scalp has been restored (you’d know it because the scalp won’t be as easily irritated with exposure to external elements) before you go back to using heat styling tools. Even then, it should be kept to a minimum.
