Hair extensions became hugely popular when they first came out into the scene. They were used by celebrities (initially) to add length and volume into their hair and allow more choices for hairstyles. Nowadays, there are more options available when it comes to materials used for making hair extensions, colours, and types. If you wish to enjoy the hair styling benefits offered by hair extensions, you need to know more about them in order to make the right purchase.

On average, human hair grows about 0.4 inch every month. Using hair extensions, therefore, is intended only for a temporary styling purpose and is not designed to add hair length or volume for good. But if you follow the proper care procedures for it, then you can definitely re-use the extensions, especially if you use the high quality kind.

Blond hair extensionYou can opt to have your hair extensions applied by a professional hairdresser. However, a lot of the new hair extensions manufactured these days is designed to be easily applied. Thus, you can easily use it yourself at home if you wanted to.

Check out this guide on basic hair extensions and their applications:

Clip-in Extension – This is the most popular type of hair extension and is the easiest to use. Hence, beginners should try out this type of extension first before moving onto other types. It is considerably more affordable than salon extensions and is ideal for when you want to style your hair at home. The material used for making clip-in extensions vary although a lot of the new ones these days make them out of human hair to make them look as natural as possible. It is a great way to instantly add length and body to your hair.

Strand-by-Strand Extension – This type of hair extension might be more suitable for application in the salon. As the name implies, you are adding the hair extensions one strand at a time. Therefore, you require the skillful hands of an expert hairdresser to ensure that every strand is strategically placed for maximum results and styling. It might be a time consuming process but it offers the most natural-looking result.

Weft Extension – This is more of a special purpose kind of hair extension wherein a group of woven hair are attached or glued onto the hair. To ensure proper placement, it is recommended that you leave it to the hands of a professional hairdresser to put it on.

Additional Tips

Take note of these basic tips when using hair extensions, especially if you are doing so for the first time:

• The first thing you need to consider before choosing what type of hair extension to get is the type of bond to be used. Make sure that there is no harm to be done on your hair during the process of bonding, which is often the case with heat bonding or those that require super strong glues. This is also the same reason why clip-in extensions are very popular.

• If you had your extensions placed by a hairdresser in a salon, you must also have it removed in a salon. This will prevent pulling or breaking not only of the extensions, but also of your natural hair.

• Follow the special care and cleaning requirements for hair extensions if you want them to last. For more tips on that, you can read this article.
