Hair Spray Application 101

Hair sprays have evolved greatly over the past few decades such that they’re no longer the roc-hard lacquer that you probably dread to use. Nowadays, styling can’t be without it – it is the finishing touch to any great hairstyle, especially if you want to retain your hair for an entire day or throughout the night. But still, there are some people that do not make the most of what this styling product can offer.

The first step in making the most of hair sprays is to know the right type for your intended use. Indeed, gone are the days wherein hair sprays meant only one thing. Today, there is one manufactured for every hair structure or problem. The most common consideration when choosing a hair spray to use, though, would be the intensity of hold, which ranges from light to strong.

Here is a step by step guide for you to know the proper way to apply hair spray:

• Start by shaking the can of hair spray. This will help the hair spray formula to keep from being dense and for easier application later on.

• Always check the nozzle of your hair spray before starting to use it. Make sure that nothing sticks out of the nozzle because it can cause the formula to release in sticky spurts rather than in an equally fine mist form.

• The ideal distance when spraying the formula onto your hair is about 30 cms or 12 inches from your hair. It is also recommended that you maintain constant motion when spritzing the formula into the hair to allow equal distribution rather than leaving too much product on your hair as the spray particles are dispersed before it gets to your strands. If you have no idea how far away 12 inches is, then it is about an arm’s length away.

• For using hair spray to add volume, flip head upside down and start to shake off your hair. Bring your hair back to its normal state again but do it without applying too much force. Take out the individual strands of your hair and spritz some hair spray at a closer distance than normal. Wait for each strand to dry before moving onto the next.

• If you are styling your hair for a special occasion or evening event, opt for a strong hold type. Then, use a technique that most hairdressers refer to as the freeze curl. Start by wrapping hair around the curling iron to give it some waves then apply the hair spray while hair is still rolled and at a closer distance. Do it in a quick and short burst of sprays, though. This will create a lasting style that’s got more volume, too.

• If you want to use hair spray to settle down some frizz showing up at the middle of the day, simply spray a small amount onto your hands. Rub the formula and then gently rub it onto your hair, especially concentrating on the most frizzy areas to smooth the unruly strands.

A word of caution though: refrain from using hair spray when you sensitive and dry scalp. If you do have to use hair spray, make sure to avoid application on the scalp area and focus only on the ends.
