In today’s world, a lot of women can’t survive without blow dryers, curling irons and straighteners as part of their day to day hair care routine. While these tools are guaranteed to give volume to limp hair or give more definition to your curls, depending on these styling products too much can also mean one thing = heat damage! With a lot of women using them on regular days, it is only a matter of time until your locks demand respite from all of the heat styling.

Before this happens, it is important to know the value of using heat protection products. These products are designed just that: to provide maximum protection to every hair strand prior to heat styling. A lot of the hair styling tools can produce up to 220oC that can damage unprotected strands, particular wet hair. If you neglect to protect it, you can end up with long term damage such as breakage, split ends, and lackluster hair.

Here are some basic rules to live by when using heat protection for your hair against heat styling:

• Dry your hair first before using any form of heat for styling. It is a major no-no to use hot tools like curling iron or hair straightener on wet hair. introducing heat to damp hair, even partially, will essentially “cook” every strand. Make sure that your hair strands are completely dry before you use these tools or else the vulnerable structure of your hair can make it highly brittle.

• Apply heat protection products on wet hair. This allows easier distribution of the heat protection formula throughout the strands.

• After applying the heat protection product, use a wide-tooth comb to run through the entire length of your hair. This will facilitate even distribution of the heat protection product from roots to ends.

• Always maintain medium heat setting when using hot tools for styling. Just because there is a high heat setting option available does not mean you need to use it! Go for the lowest possible heat setting every single time you style hair.

• Refrain from using any heat styling tools that require some metal parts of the device to come in direct contact with your hair. These spots tend to become really hot and could damage hair upon contact. For this reason, ceramic heat styling devices are recommended as safer alternative because they do not cause heat damage.

Are you giving enough protection for your hair from heat styling?
