All women aspire to have lots of volume on our hair. But for women with overly thick mane, everyday seems to be a struggle just to get those strands to submit into styling. However, it should not always be a struggle – you need to learn a few rules when it comes to managing your thick hair and achieve the hairstyle you want with ease. Here are some rules you need to follow when styling or caring for thick hair:

1. Use the right tools. The use of fine toothed comb is best relegated to making parts when you have super thick tresses. But for other styling jobs, you nee a more heavy duty tool. A wide tooth comb is your best tool for making your thick hair submit to styling. If you have naturally curly hair that is thick, you can also check this guide for must-have hair styling tools and accessories.

2. Detangle, detangle. It is a known fact that you should not try to attack at your hair, especially when you find it knotted and difficult to sort. Hence, detangle your hair at the roots first before you start working from the mid-length towards the ends. You might want to use your fingers first before switching to a wide tooth comb to avoid damaging your hair.

3. Using the right amount of product. When dealing with thick hair, it is not just about using the right product but also in determining how much product you use. You might think that you need to apply a lot of products to coat thick hair. But you have to work it into your hair with every section for a more thorough coating. You can also comb through your hair after application to ensure that it will be distributed throughout the length of your hair.

4. Add layers. One of the best styling techniques for thick hair is to add layers. It gives movement to the hair and also thin it out a little bit.

5. Avoid opting for a short haircut. If you do, it will not only be difficult to care for but also make your hair look even more thicker.

6. Braid it! Braiding is not only a creative hairstyle to try but it is also strategic for women with thick hair. This is a good technique to try when you just cannot get your thick mane to behave.

Brushing my hair! It gets matted at top too close to the roots and tangled everywhere ! It takes 45min before and after the shower to get all the knots out because it’s so thick and frizzy and plus is mid back length. And I definitly cannot have shorter hair because it looks like triangle shaped hair on my head.
