When it is cold and chilly outside, the last thing you would want to do is go out. And even more so, you would hardly be inspired to wear some makeup. But do not let the frosty winds and cool weather dampen your mood either. If you need to go out and put on makeup, make patchy foundation and ruddy cheeks a thing of the past. Here are some practical tips and hacks to winter-proof your makeup:
Prep Your Skin
In the winter, the harsh cold can make your skin feel drier than usual. It is therefore important to properly prep your skin before putting on makeup so your makeup not only looks good on, but also to protect your skin. You might notice dry patches on various parts of your skin during winter (not just on your face), so you have to deal with that — if not, your makeup will not look as radiant as you would want it to be.

Use a gentle exfoliant on your skin before putting on makeup. You have to exfoliate regularly throughout winter too. Ideally, you should exfoliate once a week. When you are done exfoliating your skin, apply a good amount of moituriser on your damp skin. This will keep your skin supple and give it the right amount of hydration it needs to better absorb the makeup.
Good skin care routine suited for the cold season is crucial to winter-proof your makeup. If you do not pay your skin its due diligence, then it will inevitably show on your makeup. One more skin care tip to consider for winter is to replace your night creams with treatment oil – jojoba, almond or rose hip oils. They are great for nourishing your skin and keeping them supple for winter.
Winter-Proof Your Makeup
- Foundation has the tendency to get blotched during winter. You can thin it down by adding a few drops of serum to the mixture. Not only will it make your foundation easier to apply minus the blotching, but the serum will also give a healthy and vibrant glow to your skin. In fact, it won’t dry up easily even with the winter cold and frosty winds.
- As your tan fades and the cold makes your skin look paler, you need to be more strategic about choosing your makeup shades. For example, cool shades work better for those with paler complexions. Winter-proof your makeup by choosing red or plum lipsticks and silver eye makeup palette. This will prevent that washed out makeup look.

- Dull skin is fairly common during the winter. Use a tinted moisturiser on your skin as part of your makeup base. A tinted moisturiser is very sheer; this enables you to wear a foundation that is darker than your skin tone to give it more colour rather than look washed out.
- When you apply the base of your makeup, do not add powder right away. In the winter, the cold will cause your skin to absorb the products right away. Hence, applying powder might not even be necessary in this case.
- If you love pink or blush tones on your cheeks, there is no need for that in the winter. When you step out, the cold will give an instant flush of red to your cheeks anyway. Opt for soft peach tones instead to avoid making your cheeks look too ruddy.
- Choosing a lip product in the winter can be extremely tricky. But there is one thing you absolutely need: a tinted lip balm. This will add instant colour to your lips and keep it hydrated. Make sure to re-apply throughout the day to keep your lips supple.
- Just like your hair, your eyelashes could also suffer during winter. Use a product designed to moisturise your lashes and lash line.
