Swimming in the pool is a fun summer activity for kids and adults alike. One can even go for swimming for hours to no end. However, you need to be extra careful when you go swimming in pools because it can be damaging to you hair, especially when you do not take appropriate measures to restore its health and vitality after a swim.

It is no secret that swimming pools contain chlorine. This substance has the capacity to bond to the hair and strip it of the natural oils that provide natural moisture. These natural oils are essential to maintaining hair health because they keep the locks nourished and moisturised from within. Without natural oil, it can also make hair vulnerable to splitting or breakage.

Here are essential steps that you need to take post-swimming to prevent damage from taking over your hair:

• Always wet your hair before going into the pool. When hair is wet, it will prevent the strands from soaking up the chemicals present in the pool water.

• Look for a hair care product containing either olive oil or coconut oil as ingredient. These can help to prevent that green tinge on your hair resulting from copper oxidation upon exposure to chlorine. In addition, both ingredients provide the added benefit of providing a protective layer in your hair for lasting moisture.

• Don’t forget to wash hair with an EDTA-containing clarifying shampoo. This is crucial to ensure that no chemical residue is left behind on your hair after swimming session in the pool.

• For the final rinse post-swimming, add apple cider vinegar into the mixture. This DIY ingredient is highly effective in getting rid of residues on hair without making it look flat.

• Get a weekly hot oil treatment, especially if you swim often, to keep locks hydrated.

• Prepare a hair mask treatment containing mayonnaise as main ingredient. Use this on a weekly basis. This will give intense hydration to your locks.

• Buy a shampoo that is specifically formulated for swimmers and to give protection to your hair from further damage after a swim.

What’s your post-swim hair care routine?
