Having naturally fine hair can be frustrating when it comes to styling because not only does this kind of hair look unhealthy, it lacks natural volume too. On the flip side, having thicker and fuller hair can give you great looking hair with a little teasing or basic styling such as ponytail or a bun. Don’t be frustrated, though. You do not have to blame your genes all the time whenever you feel the frustration of dealing with fine hair creeping in.
A quick and easy way to add instant volume to your hair (especially if you are not keen on experimenting with a new hairstyle) is to colour it. Each strand of hair, when examined in a microscope, has scales that are smooth (for those that had never been chemically processed before). But when you add a colouring mixture, the cuticle opens up to allow the mixture to penetrate deep inside the cuticle. This causes the hair follicles to appear fuller as the scales open up, too.
Blow drying is also another excellent technique for adding volume and making hair appear thicker. The effect of blow drying is the same with that of adding a colour mixture to your hair – it prompts the scales to open up and look thicker. The combination of the heat coming from the blow dryer and the air it brings upon the hair can make the hair look thicker by up to three times. Try using a brush as you blow dry for a fuller effect.
The use of the right product will also benefit your cause to achieving thicker, fuller hair. Opt for a volumising shampoo that is formulated to plump up the volume of your locks. Another great product to use is a root lifter. As the name implies, it helps to lift the hair off the scalp. There are several products to choose from in the market which are designed to give you fuller, thicker hair. But be advised that each product will create varying effects depending on your natural texture and type. Hence, it might be best to do some testing first to see what works best.
Do’s & Don’ts
• DO use a deep conditioner. If you think that going to the salon for a deep conditioning treatment is too expensive, make your own recipe at home using heated olive oil, coconut oil, or hemp seed oil.
• DO NOT style wet hair. When you want thicker hair, you have to start by preventing damage and splitting of ends. When hair is wet, it is at its most vulnerable state. Be extremely gentle when handling wet hair.
• DO nourish hair from the inside-out. Apply plenty of hair vitamins and minerals to nourish every strand. In addition, you have to complement any effort to nourishing hair with a healthy, balanced diet.
