Getting a new hair colour is one of the best ways to revamp your look or create more impact with your hairstyle. When you are planning to get a new colour, though, it pays to be extra cautious to ensure that you can get the look you want without causing long term damage to your locks. The chemical process with which your hair is subjected to can be harsh and lead to damage when you fail to follow the proper colouring procedure.
To avoid causing damage to your hair when you get a new colour, take note of these hair colour don’ts:

1. DO NOT wash your hair for 48 hours post-colour treatment. This is a must when you want to ensure that the colour pigments have penetrated beyond the outer cuticle layer. If you paid good money to get your hair colour done, make sure to protect your investment by following this basic rule.
2. DO NOT cut corners. Whether you are colouring at home or in-salon, follow the specified waiting time for colour to set in before you wash it. The process can take a long time. However, do not give into the temptation to cut corners in order to save time because there is a reason why every step requires you to wait a certain amount of time. You can’t rush good results.
3. DO NOT expect too much. Oftentimes, when you buy a colouring product, you expect to get results as shown in the box’s cover. But every hair type is unique and the condition of your hair will also determine the final outcome of the colouring process. Make sure to understand what brands work best for your hair to get satisfying results.
4. DO NOT style your hair using hot tools. In addition, avoid using a high heat setting on coloured hair when working with tools such as hair straighteners or curling iron. Coloured hair is vulnerable to heat and can get easily damaged with excessive exposure.
5. DO NOT swim at the pool. The chlorine used in swimming pools not only speeds up the fading process of the colour but it can also cause a chemical reaction that can be potentially damaging to your hair. If you must swim, don’t forget to wear a swimming cap.
6. DO NOT use shampoos and conditioners that are not specially formulated for colour treated hair. These products can be too harsh on the coloured hair or contribute to the faster deterioration of colour pigments.
7. DO NOT colour too often. Sure, you can get experimental with various colours and shades but you have to set limits as to how often you should change colour. Ideally, you should get a new colour twice every year. Anything more than that is simply overdoing it. You would not want to compromise the health of your hair or the possibility of yielding mediocre results.
