Ways to Prevent Damage from Curling Irons

The use of heat styling tools such as curling iron is inevitable these days. It has become a huge part of most women’s daily hair care routine, especially since curling irons and other heat tools make it possible to create variant hairstyles at home. But there are also a downside to the regular use of such styling tools mainly because they rely on heat to be able to achieve the desired style or curl. It does not mean, however, that you are doomed – there are ways that you can prevent or reduce damage associated with curling iron if you know what you are doing.

The most important rule to remember when using curling irons, if you want to reduce damage, is to never use this heat tool on wet hair. After you shower, make sure to dry your hair completely before using this tool. Or else, the heat can cause breakage or splitting as wet hair tends to be highly vulnerable. Introducing heat into your wet strands can therefore cause it to split or break, depending on the texture of your hair. Nonetheless, it can result in some serious damage, which can even be irreparable.

Next, do not forget to use heat protection product on your hair. This product is designed to protect every strand of your hair against contact with high temperature, which is very common with heat styling tools. There are several of these products in the market so invest in a good one to ensure thorough protection.

Choose a good quality curling iron for your regular styling needs. Experts recommend investing in a ceramic iron because it holds heat better and ensures even distribution of heat. If you have to curl your hair regular, make sure to go for this type of curling iron for less damage.

Do not hold your hair within the curling iron barrel for more than 15 seconds or so. Curling irons work differently than hair straighteners do. The mere motion of twisting your hair around the curling iron’s barrels is enough to create the curl while the heat aids in retention of those curls. Thus, there is no need to keep your hair wrapped around the barrels for too long as it will cause your hair to become fried.

In the end, prevention is still better than cure. Make sure you take note of the above tips for using curling irons with less damage to your hair. If possible, try not to curl your hair ever day and give it rest from exposure to heat.
