Your Complete Guide to Salon Vocabulary

When you go into the salon, you almost always have an idea on what haircut or hairstyle you want to try. But most women leave the salon not feeling too happy about their new hair. This could be either one of two things: 1) you need to change your hairstylist, or 2) you need to be more accurate when describing what haircut you want. Even the best hairstylist needs proper guidance from your end because it is you, after all, who knows what you want. To make it easier for you to describe your desired haircut or hairstyle on your next salon appointment, take note of these common terminologies:

Cuts

Blunt Cut – This is a highly popular haircut among women these days. This particular cut characterises the lack of layers in the haircut. The cut is formed within a straight line. However, a lot of clients confuse this cut with a shoulder length bob. It is therefore important to be clear with your stylist to avoid confusion. Depositphotos_24994151_original

Layered Cut – Layers are those angles in your hair that starts from the crown down to the ends. According to hairstylists, it is impossible to determine how much layers you can make. The shorter the length of the layers is, the more layers it will appear you have. If you want to emphasize the layers in your cut, then tell your stylist about it.

Soft Layered Cut – In contrast to the above wherein you want the layers to become highly evident, soft layers are typically longer and are less noticeable.

A-line Bob – This type of cut offers an angled look to the hair’s structure because the back part of the hair is shorter. Meanwhile, the front is angled without any layers.

Stacked Bob – This type of bob often comes with shorter layers underneath. Meanwhile, the back is formed with layers to create the illusion of volume at the back part.

Inverted Bob – This type of bob is the reverse of the A-line bob: the front is shorter than the back part.

Lob – This is the term used to refer to a “long bob”.

Colours

Permanent – This type of hair colour is designed to open up the hair shaft in order to allow the new colour pigments to penetrate into the hair and replace the existing colour. Hence, permanent colours are formulated with lifting agents such as hydrogen peroxide and ammonia.

Semi-Permanent – This type of hair colour does not penetrate into the hair shaft, which is why the colour is not as long lasting.

Demi-Permanent – This type of hair colour slightly penetrates into the hair shaft. However, it is not designed to completely alter the natural hair colour. It is, however, used to hide gray hair or enhance the existing hair colour. This type of colour can last between 6 to 8 weeks.

Ombre – The ombre trend has been on for a long time but it continues to make waves. The next time you visit the salon to get an ombre, do understand that you can create a more natural colour if you opt for a tone on tone hue. The roots are often darker than the ends, as if your hair is naturally fading. But these days, ombre provides more freedom to offer different colours aside from a lighter shade than your natural colour.

Reverse Ombre – As the name implies, this is the opposite of ombre wherein the roots are lighter than the ends. Make sure you don’t confuse one over the other.

Are you adept with the prevailing salon vocabulary?
