Chlorine is a common ingredient found in swimming pools. Although chlorine is necessary to disinfect the pool water, it can have detrimental effects to your hair. One of the most noticeable effects of chlorine on your hair is that it becomes extremely dry. While a one-time exposure to chlorine is not really damaging, imagine if you frequently hit the pool. It can cause your hair strands to become fragile and easily break on top of your hair turning green. Indeed, chlorine brings forth a host of damage to your hair. Make sure to stop damage on its tracks before it becomes irreversible.

Preventive Care

Prevention is always better than cure. And this couldn’t be more true in the sense of caring for your hair against chlorine. These steps will help you out:

Saturate your hair with water. Before entering the pool, make it a habit to go in the shower first and wet your hair using clean tap water. This will prompt your hair to absorb the water and make it more difficult for chlorine to penetrate into your hair strands once you swim on the pool. Your hair acts as a sponge; by saturating it with water, you can prevent chlorine from being absorbed by your hair.

Wear a swim cap. If you’re not satisfied with saturating your hair, go the extra mile and wear a swim cap. On top of washing hair with water, you can also lightly apply conditioner before putting the swim cap on.

If chlorine has already caused damage to your hair, causing it to become frizzy, straw-like in texture, looking bleached or have dry ends, don’t fret. You can revive your hair to its pre-chlorine damage state using these tips:

Use clarifying shampoo. You shouldn’t be content with washing off chlorine as it could be building up on your hair. Hence, use a clarifying shampoo and conditioner so you can fully get rid of the chlorine effect from your hair. You can also try a DIY recipe such as an apple cider vinegar rinse to clarify your hair.

Regularly use a protein treatment. A protein treatment that is designed to replenish your hair nutrients is recommended for hair that has suffered chlorine damage.

Trim off dry and damaged ends. The ends are most vulnerable to damage and can exhibit the signs of dryness. If you find that it is difficult to treat even with a hair mask, you can schedule an appointment with your hairstylist to have it trimmed off.

Deep condition your hair. On top of a protein treatment, a deep conditioning treatment is a great way to replenish lost nutrients and nourish your hair from within. This will help restore the natural and healthy appearance of your hair in a short amount of time.

DIY remedy. Use baking soda to treat chlorine damaged hair. Add 1/4 cup of baking soda to your regular shampoo (if you do not have clarifying shampoo). Shampoo your hair as usual. Do this once a week to remove any impurities caused by chlorine to your hair and scalp.
